Obama Accomplishments

August 9, 2011

This is a list of Obama Administration accomplishments that I think are important, and in many if not most cases wouldn’t have happened if McCain and Palin had won in 2008.

There’s the health care/insurance stuff. More health care centers for vets. Allowing Medicare to negotiate cheaper drug prices. Expanding the SCHIP program to provide health care for millions of children. And of course the big health care reform bill, which didn’t go the single-payer/universal public health care route, but is better than nothing.

Then there’s the military stuff. The restarted nuclear nonproliferation talks, cutting of the missile defense program by $.4 billion, beginning of the withdrawal of troops from Iraq (but didn’t go nearly far enough, didn’t end all the wars, close Gitmo, etc.), phased out development and construction of F-22 and other unneeded, outdated weapons systems, and paid expenses of families of dead soldiers to be at Dover AFB when the body arrives. Increased funds to the VA for mental health care.

I’m happy about the new federal funding for science and research labs, the removal of restrictions on embryonic stem-cell research, and the appointment of the country’s first Chief Technology Officer.

And about all the civil rights stuff that I don’t think would’ve ever happened with McCain/Palin. Enforcement of equal pay for women. More funding for Individuals with Disabilities Act. Extending benefits to same-sex partners of federal employees. Support for the Hate Crimes Prevention Act. Repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. Signing of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Ordering increased federal employment of individuals with disabilities. Establishing a review of federal mandatory sentencing laws, and reducing the differences between mandatory sentences for crack and powder cocaine.

Of course there are a lot of areas Obama has disappointed me, but maybe not as intensely as some people. I think my expectations were lower to begin with, and I definitely never bought into the teabagger hype about how liberal Obama was.
